Topography and Geographic Features

Cheonan is divided into western and eastern regions by a vein of Taejosan Mountain (424m) extending from the Charyeongsanmaek Mountain Range, cutting through the city in the north-south direction. The northern area contains long stretches of low hills extending to the Pyeongtaek Plains, while the eastern area lies adject to Asan-si and Jincheon-gun bordering the Guksabong Peak and Mangeunsan and Manggyeongsan mountains.

The bodies of water in the area consist of the Anseong Stream, Sapgyo Stream and the Geumgang water system. In the northern area, the surface water flows north, from Seonghwan, Seonggeo, Jiksan and Ipjang areas, into the Anseong stream and the West Sea. In the eastern area, the water from the watersheds of Seonggeo, Jincheon, and Jeonui flows toward the south and east and forms the upstream part of the Miho stream, which flows into the Geumgang River. In the southwestern area, the bodies of water in Jiksan and Mokcheon-eup form watersheds and flow westward to be discharged into the Gokgyo Stream and flow into the West Sea.

According to advanced analysis data, 49.8% (316.71㎢) of the total area is located below the elevation level of 100m, while 7.5% (47.671㎢) is located above the elevation level of 300m. As for the degree of slope, Taejosan and Heukseongsan mountains in the central area, Mangeunsan Mountain in the east, and Gwangdeoksan and Manggyeongsan mountains in the west have 25˚ slopes, whereas most of the other areas are relatively flat with 15˚ slopes.
